Researchers at the Imperial College London, in conjunction with researchers at
Volvo, have developed and patented a flexible, light and strong prototype material
that could become a substitute for the traditional battery. Whilst simultaneously acting as a casing
or piece of car bodywork, this new material is being used in prototype vehicles
currently under development by Volvo to reduce weight and increase the
lifetime of hybrid cars.
This material also alleviates the constraints on design for many portable electronic devices. Using this new prototype material would mean a separate battery is no longer required. This could result in mobile phones as thin as a credit card and ultra thin laptops.
