STANDING on my balcony overlooking the Andaman Sea, I feel an overwhelming sense of serenity mixed with insignificance in the face of such vast beauty. I’m at The St. Regis Langkawi, and I’ve barely made my way through the door to my room before I’m overwhelmed by the stunning natural surroundings.
Soft beiges and blues enhance the view from my window even further. The room is an oasis of modern luxury and centres a masterful infusion of European and and Middle Eastern decorative styles. Designed by GA Design, the decor celebrates an exposure to the elements while also ensuring complete privacy and calm.
Once I had stopped from gawking at the ocean before me, my eye is immediately captured by the art adorning the walls. From my room, all the way down to the lobby and beyond, I follow the artistic transition from traditional to modern like a child following a treasure map. What begins as charming depictions of Langkawian life soon melt into more abstract creations, all by local Malaysian artists.

Sunset Villa
Though my instinct is to dive straight into the ocean, the long flight has left me hungry and eager to try out the food spots of the resort. A quick aperitif at The St. Regis Langkawi Bar and I’m on my way to Kayuputi – the resort’s overwater restaurant devised by the world- renowned designer Bill Bensley. I arrive just in time for the sunset, which is made all the more ethereal by the decor of swaying hammocks and white peacock feather chairs.

Dining at The St. Regis Langkawi was an experience in itself. From the fine pan-Asian cuisine served up on my first night at Kayuputi, to the superb breakfasts at L’Orangerie and fresh seafood from Pantai Grill, each location was defined by its setting.
While at one moment I’m enjoying a gourmet meal in the middle of a forest, the next I’m on a beachfront sipping cocktails, the lively mix of dining options and abundance of choice giving a welcomed sense of freedom.

Grand Driveway
Though part of an extensive catalogue of residences all over the world, St. Regis succeeded in making their Langkawi hotel different. Be it with the promotion of Malaysian talents, authentic Balinese sculptures that line the entrance, or immersing guests entirely into the surroundings, the retreat is a departure from their other destinations, partnering their famous service with a dream-like vacation rich in culture.
