SANTORINI is located within the most southerly point of the Cyclades Archipelago of Greece. A volcanic eruption 3,500 years ago sunk the entire landmass, with the remnants forming the world’s only crescent-shaped volcanic caldera poking through the glassy Aegean.
This is my view as I soak in the hot tub on my balcony, perched high upon the cliffs at the Andronis Luxury Suites.
Infinity Pool
A member of the Andronis Executive Collection, this boutique hotel is carved out of volcanic rock, and the bathroom in my spacious room compliments its atmospheric grey shades with notable quantities of Molton Brown colourful products, providing the only hints of colour.
The hotel’s outdoor spaces are reached by many rugged steps meandering down and then up towards the canopied breakfast area, where a multi-course à la carte breakfast is served.
On my first afternoon, I head out onto Oia’s main pedestrianised street to amble along the café- and shop-lined lanes leading to the Castro Walls. I’m camera-ready as I find a vantage point to gaze towards the acclaimed Santorini sunset as it vanishes into the sea.
Suite at Andronis Suites
At night-time, the hotel buzzes at super-cool Lycabettus, perched high atop a cliff, renowned as the most famous restaurant on the island for good reason.
For here in Santorini, it’s all about the view, and while I devour my plate of melt-in-the-mouth roasted cod, accompanied with locally sourced asparagus and fava bean puree, I glance down towards the infinity pool, lit up by the moon like a giant emerald against the black sea.
And as the lights from the surrounding whitewashed buildings shine against the night sky, its reaffirmed why this gem of an island is known as the jewel of the Aegean.
