Glass enjoys a weekend break at Arlo SoHo, New York

HOLIDAYS don’t necessarily have to mean packing a suitcase and jumping on a plane. Sometimes, taking a 20-minute Uber from your home to your destination is much more preferable. On a recent humid summer weekend, Glass took residence at Arlo SoHo, a beautifully-designed boutique property that sits between the West Village and Tribeca.

The property is a smart, inviting space, grounded by a very spacious open-plan lobby area where you can sit with your laptop at the hefty communal table or take drinks with friends on easy chairs. Parallel to this area is a large courtyard – pretty rare for New York – which offers a delightful breathe of fresh air, quite literally. For the summer, the courtyard has been transformed into Camp Arlo, so you can at least feel as though you have escaped the bustle of the city.

Complete with TENTRR tents (hardcore canvas creations that feel like a house) and astroturf, it’s a fun idea, providing a novel environment and ambiance. A special Camp Arlo menu has also been created, which includes a daily hot dog special named after various National Parks.

Another summer addition is the hotel’s recent launch of its new rooftop bar, Arlo Roof Top (A.R.T.). During our recent visit, it was the perfect place to relax after a busy evening – the stunning views of the Hudson River are surrounding cityscape are pretty special. Some great snacks are on offer too, including devilled eggs, house marinated olives and delicious flatbreads. Fancy must-have cocktails include Strawberry Field (strawberry puree and cava, anyone?) and the classic West Side (vodka, lemon juice and soda).

The hotel’s other dining options include the restaurant Harold’s, where you can expect high-quality meat and seafood dishes alongside a nourishing salad bar, and the wonderful 24-hour Bodega situated at reception, which provides excellent tuck shop options from local vendors and even incorporates a mini Dylan’s Candy Bar.

When it’s time to sleep, you’ll be greatly impressed by the quality and design of the guest rooms. Kitted out with modern furniture and clean lines, each room is masterfully thought out, from the fold-out desk and bluetooth radio, to the full-length mirror and bedside charging station. The electric (double) blinds are also a fantastic touch.

For a playful, city getaway, Arlo SoHo couldn’t be a safer bet.
