OCCUPYING the vast grounds of a golfing resort mecca whose award-winning courses are consistently voted the best in Spain, Hotel Camiral has established itself as a class act in its own right. The five-star property impresses so immensely with its contemporary ambiance and luxurious edge that you will want to sojourn here even if playing a round is the last thing on your mind.

Although set within the sleepy Spanish countryside, the hotel’s character is far from rural. The lobby’s sky-high ceilings frame Chesterfield sofas and Ikat-print armchairs, while potted plants complement Catalan-style floor designs. Guest rooms provide spectacular vistas of the manicured landscape and tiled bathrooms boasting hand-painted Spanish murals.

On-site facilities are offered in abundance. When strolling or biking around the grounds, make sure to stop off for a delicious snack at the elegant Club Café on the way, or after your lesson with the excellent resident tennis coach, which is terrific fun. As well as extending its spa – a truly charming space that centres around an impressive hydrotherapy pool – the resort is in the middle of creating an on-site vineyard, as well as a lake that will cater for water sports. Soon enough, there really won’t be any reason to leave the Camiral haven.

If you do feel like venturing out, though, the property is bordered by the striking medieval city of Girona to the north, and the dazzling Cami de Ronda coastal pathway to the south – both short drives. Day trips are another easy option: Barcelona is an hour away and picturesque towns in the region, such as Cadaqués (where Salvador Dalí resided), are certainly worth the journey.
