Glass enjoys laid-back Swiss luxury at Le Grand Bellevue, Gstaad

AFTER travelling though the beautiful Swiss Alps, we arrived in Gstaad by the scenic GoldenPass railway. Gstaad is situated around two hours from Geneva, surrounded by soaring mountains, and its prestigious international ski and boarding schools have long made it a holiday destination for royalty and celebrities. At a prominent position in this resort town stands Le Grand Bellevue, offering easy-going contemporary elegance for guests looking to unwind in a bubble of luxury and sophistication.

The hotel’s 57 rooms, including nine luxury suites, afford stunning views over the surrounding mountains and parkland. The Hotel reopened a few years ago with a fresh personality and interiors, bringing in intricate Neisha Crosland fabrics, House of Hackney wallpapers and a 50ft George Smith Chesterfield sofa in the Bar and club room – the longest ever commissioned. Award-winning head chef Urs Gschwend leads the Michelin-starred restaurant, and downstairs the intimate sushi bar serves Japanese delights. The hotel also contains a 3000 sqm Le Grand Spa with a Jacuzzi and pool, offering an extensive range of treatments, and a cinema for pure indolent vegetation.

One of our favourite quirks of the hotel was Le Petit Chalet – a picturesque log cabin in the hotel grounds with a roaring log fire heating cauldrons of fondue and raclette – a perfect apres-ski environment to reflect on the day’s experiences. The Hotel is also superbly equipped for snow sports, with hire shop and regular transport to the mountains.

We found, however, that one of Le Grand Bellevue’s most memorable features was the exceptional level of service and personal treatment received by its guests. The staff were considerate, thoughtful and professional and gave one the feeling of being thoroughly looked after and taken care of – everything you’d expect from this pinnacle of laid-back Swiss luxury
