Inside the new ‘I Am Anarchy’ suite at Chateau Denmark Hotel

PUNK and good ol’ rock ‘n’ roll is at the very heart of Chateau Denmark, the 5* hotel that sits on Denmark Street, London.

In location, look, and stature, music is part of the DNA of this hotel, after all, it has drawn influence from the area’s rich cultural, and musical heritage, amongst the publishers, musicians, studios and guitar shops; and then there’s the liveliness of Soho just beyond.

Spanning 16 buildings along and in the vicinity of Denmark Street, the hotel also has its very own hotspot—its award-winning bar, Thirteen, where baroque and gothic charm collide in an oh-so-alluring and dark setting.

The sexiness doesn’t stop there, as the hotel has exciting news: it has officially opened the former home of the Sex Pistols and turned it into one of their signature suites with a very apt name, ‘I Am Anarchy’, of course. Situated in a mews house that’s tucked away just behind Denmark Street, yes, it’s true, it was a former home of the Sex Pistols.

And this just adds to the “good times with bad company sentiment” vibe and appeal of the hotel. Carrie Wicks of Chateau Denmark says, This apartment is a culmination of patience and punk, because like punk culture it is complex. We’re very pleased to return one of London’s most storied landmarks to the scene.”

A place that was a flurry of activity, it’s thought that, by the grace of Malcom McLaren, the Sex Pistols lived, rehearsed and recorded in the mews house located behind No. 6 Denmark Street. It’s played host to a whole host of sessions, including one that saw Johnny Rotten make his very own mark on the place—quite literally—as he took to the walls to draw caricatures of himself and his fellow band mates; ever since, a lasting mark was left on the street.

As you may have guessed, it’s also where they recorded demos for two of their tracks ‘Anarchy in the UK’ and ‘Pretty Vacant’.

As for its location, the Signature Suite is set back, and even features its very own private courtyard, enabling guests to sleep in a little piece of history. As Carrie says on the experience, As a collection of rooms and apartments, we’re able to provide a very unique experience for those looking for something different.”

As you’d expect this duplex mews house is kitted out in full rock ‘n’ roll aesthetics, and as such there are tartan and sheer blinds, along with upholstered graffitied chairs for punk assertion. The living space has been re-imagined and is upstairs—and it’s where the Johnny Rotten etchings reside.

Carrie says, The drawings on the walls from the former occupiers, the Sex Pistols are very bold. There’s so much history in the building. So, whether you’re a fan or not, the experience of waking up, or staying up in I Am Anarchy is something special. From the discreet private entrance to the exclusive courtyard and the bar – each is enough to set the imagination racing, it’s certainly not to be missed.”

The suite comes complete with kitchenette maxi-bar (obviously), along with statement furniture, curiosities, art (cute Michael Prescott’s ‘No Future’) and objet d’art, in ode to the building’s history, and punk culture. The bedroom, which is downstairs, dons a black Murphy bed, with marbled moulin noir bedsides.

Other standout features include the 65-inch screens that house thousands of hours of playlists and entertainment, and of course, a sound system to match, courtesy of Void and Artcoustic. It’s certainly a must-stay for Pistol aficionados, creatives, and punk lovers alike.
