Jaguar Brings Type 01 Prototype to Monaco’s Streets

JAGUAR debuted its upcoming Type 01 luxury electric GT in Monaco this weekend, sending early prototypes through the Principality’s famous winding roads during the Monaco E-Prix.

The camouflage wrap revealed more of the car’s shape, showing a long silhouette as it passed Monaco landmarks including Sainte-Dévote, Casino Square and La Rascasse. The four-door electric grand tourer, designed and built in the UK, will be the first model of Jaguar’s next generation and remains in development.

Jaguar says the Type 01 has benefited from lessons learned through its Formula E program. Specifically, technology from the championship-winning Jaguar TCS Racing team influenced the car’s all-wheel drive systems for enhanced traction, regenerative braking to recover energy, and improved efficiency in charging. These technologies, developed in motorsport, aim to improve performance, increase range, and reduce energy loss in the production car.

Rawdon Glover, Managing Director of Jaguar, said Formula E expertise had played an important role in the car’s development, “To achieve our vision for Type 01, we not only harnessed our Formula E know-how but also embedded the competition mindset of Jaguar TCS Racing in our engineering teams. This helped us develop innovative solutions for our luxury four-door GT.”

The Type name has formed an important part of Jaguar’s heritage, first appearing on the Le Mans-winning C-type in 1951, then later being used on road cars including the E-type and F-TYPE; the “0” in Type 01 references electric propulsion and zero tailpipe emissions, while the “1” nods to the first model of the brand’s next generation.
