Six Questions of Separation – Nicholas Kunz

Founded in 2003 by Arizona-born sister and brother Nicholas and Christopher, fashion brand Nicholas Kunz is based in New York. Creative director Nicholas studied at FIT in New York and then attended the Polimoda School of Design, in Florence. When she returned to the States, she worked at DKNY before joining the founding team of Coach Men’s sportswear. From there Nicholas worked for a variety of companies such as Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, Nautica,  and Polo. Her brother and co-founder Christopher is a MBA graduate from the Eller Graduate School of Management in Marketing and Finance. Before setting up the company with his sister, he worked for the Los Alamos National Laboratory, and from there worked in the fashion industry with companies like Polo Ralph Lauren.

Their company Nicholas K aspires to offer modern classics to a sophisticated client base and employ high quality traditional design with a modern angle, Nicholas K has a full women’s RTW product range which includes accessories and launched their menswear line in AW06.

Glass spoke to Nicholas about her latest work and to learn what drives her to create.

Urban nomad.

How did you get your start in fashion?
Designing at DKNY.

Anywhere surrounded by nature and solitude/isolation.

Who is your favourite designer working in fashion today?
Haider Ackermann.

Do you have any advice for young people wanting to break into the industry?
There is never one perfect formula. Everyone has their own path.
