SET ON the banks of the Douro in Vila Nova de Gaia, Forte de Gaia, Autograph Collection immediately immerses me in Porto’s wine culture. Surrounded by historic port cellars and overlooking the river towards Porto’s Ribeira district, the hotel feels deeply connected to the city while still offering a calm retreat away from the crowds.
On arrival, I’m welcomed with a chilled glass of white port – crisp, refreshing and the perfect introduction to the region. Throughout the hotel, the design feels modern and inviting, with earthy colours, textured finishes and subtle references to the region’s wine culture woven in.

I check into one of the property’s deluxe river view rooms, which offers exactly what the hotel promises: exceptional comfort and elegance. Large windows frame sweeping views across the Douro, while the room itself feels spacious and peaceful, the kind of place that makes slowing down feel effortless.

The location is another standout. Sitting within Gaia’s cultural district, the hotel places me within walking distance of independent shops, riverside restaurants and some of the city’s most famous port wine houses. Crossing the Dom Luís I Bridge into Porto is equally easy, making it simple to explore both sides of the river throughout the stay.
One of my favourite spaces quickly becomes the hotel bar, Roxo Wine & Spirits, where cocktails and local wines are served in an atmosphere that feels intimate and polished without trying too hard. Mornings begin slowly in the striking breakfast room, where generous buffet spreads are paired with panoramic river views that make lingering over coffee incredibly tempting.

Beyond the design and location, Forte de Gaia creates a sense of escape that feels rare in the middle of a city. Between the heated outdoor pool, wine experiences and relaxed ambiance, everything encourages me to settle into Porto life a little longer than planned.
