The Sun Rose West Hollywood Opens Two New Rooftop Restaurants

YUHI, an intimate Japanese omakase counter, and Oleander, a Coastal Pacific-inspired restaurant, bring two new dining concepts to the Sunset Strip hotel.

The Sun Rose West Hollywood has expanded its rooftop dining with two new restaurants, Yuhi and Oleander, developed in partnership with SAGA Hospitality. Launched on 7 August, the openings arrive about a year after the hotel debuted on the Sunset Strip, adding two distinct culinary experiences to its rooftop overlooking Los Angeles.

Yuhi

Yuhi takes a more intimate approach to dining, with just 12 seats arranged around an omakase counter. Named after the Japanese word for “evening sun”, the restaurant offers a 17-course tasting menu shaped by seasonal ingredients and the chef’s daily market finds. Guests can watch each course being prepared and plated, with the experience centred on traditional Japanese techniques and carefully sourced seafood.

The kitchen is led by Chef Naomi Kubo, whose Japanese-American background and early exposure to seafood through her family’s business have informed her ingredient-led approach. The menu includes hamachi with orange, Thai chilli, tobiko and micro shiso, alongside A5 wagyu finished with Japanese yakiniku, toasted sesame and grated daikon. With only 12 places available, reservations are required.

Oleander

Taking a broader view of Pacific Rim cuisine, Oleander serves lunch and dinner beside the rooftop pool. Its menu draws on culinary traditions from across the Pacific, bringing together Peruvian ceviche, Japanese grilling, Mexican cooking and Hawaiian influences. Seafood and seasonal produce feature prominently, with dishes ranging from oysters with yuzu kosho mignonette to whole fish cooked over an open flame.

Wagyu Beef Tartare

Rooftop Chef de Cuisine Grace Dong, a Korean-American chef raised in Los Angeles, leads the kitchen. At dinner, the menu expands to include bincho-grilled wagyu skewers, a bone-in wagyu ribeye with garlic-roasted bone marrow and wood-fired Puerto Nuevo lobster. Desserts include banana chocolate cake with macadamia nut crémeux and brown butter banana ice cream.

Mango Yogurt Semifreddo

The drinks menu follows a similarly cross-cultural approach, with cocktails incorporating ingredients such as yuzu shochu, sparkling sake, Japanese whisky and toasted sesame. Together, the two restaurants offer different ways to experience the rooftop, from Yuhi’s multi-course omakase to Oleander’s more expansive, fire-led menu.

The new openings join the hotel’s existing dining venues, including Ritual, a lobby-level cocktail and wine bar, and Palmier, which serves coffee, pastries and light bites. Beyond food and drink, The Sun Rose is also home to a screening room, a bowling alley and Live at The Sun Rose, an intimate music venue that continues the Sunset Strip’s longstanding connection to live performance.
