Moncler redefines construction with new Sacai collaboration

HAVING just celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2022, it comes as no surprise that Moncler has decided to make its 2023 offerings particularly exciting.

In fact, the brand’s latest collaboration with Sacai is the perfect utilitarian showcase. Chitose Abe – creative director of Sacai – contemplated upon the future Moncler aesthetic.

Combining Moncler’s impressive history with Abe’s contemporary, pragmatic design approach, the capsule is certain to be an immediate success.

Sacai centres itself around Japanese design principles. The brand is renowned for its subversive take on standard silhouettes and textures across all forms of apparel – including sportswear and couture. Moreover, Abe is fuelled by a relentless drive for innovation.

Sacai garments are designed to be timeless, while also experimental in form and fit. The new capsule is no exception to these codes.

Consisting of four looks, the capsule looks at ways in which pieces can be adjusted and morphed into new silhouettes thanks to various clever constructions. Two full looks for men and two for women have been crafted in juxtaposing black and off-white ecru – a typical Sacai colour palette.

Additionally, the capsule’s dynamic nature means that experimentation is a given when it comes to styling. For example, jackets can be attached to trousers to become a boiler-suit, puffers turn into capes and down coats can be transformed into backpacks.

Intertwining her design signatures into the capsule, Abe also interweaves femininity and fluidity into the practical pieces. Clothing is viewed as an accessory to the body. Jackets and blazers are effortlessly styled to reveal pleated dresses, lingerie-inspired pieces and more soft shapes.
