Hubert de Givenchy dies aged 91

FRENCH couturier and founder of the House of Givenchy, Hubert de Givenchy, has died aged 91. Confirmation of his death came from his partner Philippe Venet, who announced Givenchy’s passing to French news agency, Agence France-Presse.

Venet said, “It is with huge sadness that we inform you that Hubert Taffin de Givenchy has died.”

Givenchy made his name in the fashion industry beginning his career working for Elsa Schiaparelli, before establishing the House of Givenchy in 1952, aged 24. His most memorable work, however, was the iconic creation of the Little Black Dress worn by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, 1961. His friendship with Hepburn spanned multiple decades, with other famous clientele including Princess Grace of Monaco, Jackie Kennedy and Wallis Simpson.

Hubert de Givenchy eventually sold the House of Givenchy to LVHM Luxury Group in 1998 but continued his role as creative director until 1995. The news of his death comes shortly after the announcement of Riccardo Tisci leaving the fashion house to take the position of chief creative officer at Burberry after 17 successful years as Givenchy’s creative director.
