Adidas by Tom Dixon SS14

During Milan’s Salone de Mobile this past April, British industrial designer Tom Dixon first introduced his debut collaboration with German sporting giant Adidas. Officially scheduled to launch later next month, the adidas by Tom Dixon spring/summer 2014 collection is revealed in its entirety.

Tom Dixon’s travel/fashion collaboration with Adidas is a new departure and captures Dixon’s innovative flair in the designs. The collection, while officially unisex, clearly leans towards menswear. Dubbed The Capsule, the collection is designed with the spontaneous contemporary traveler in mind, the trans-seasonal range offers exactly what one needs for an unexpected week away from home.

There are well-thought-out details, the clothes are mostly multi-functional; a reversible welding shirt with poppers becomes a hunting-style jacket with big pockets, a down jacket that turns into a sleeping bag, and a three-piece set (trouser, blouson and overall) that can be separated or zipped together in different combinations – all signature Dixon playfulness in just the right measure and shows the extent of their functionality.

The key piece in the collection is the carry-on rucksack which unfolds into a portable wardrobe with pockets, it looks plain on the outside but technically advanced on the inside. As for the footwear, still very pleasing and made of just two elements secured in place with a single strip of stitched PVC tape, shows the technique of old craftsmanship design.

In typical Tom Dixon fashion, the entire collection sticks to a simple colour scheme with subtle, mindful detailing—fused pocket seams and solid copper bag zips, pants buttons and shoelace tabs. The collection definitely has a more grown-up, street appeal.
