CPHFW SS27: Anne Sofie Madsen

COPENHAGEN, DENMARK — After weeks book-ended by mega-productions by fashion’s global powerhouses, the intimate scale of Anne Sofie Madsen’s shows and the creative output felt vital, even restorative. And it wasn’t only a moment for breezy fashion. The effect was romantic but never too mannered, and for all the soft references going on, the clothes didn’t read as contrived or precious.

As the designer explained, the label’s modus operandi was to soften Spring’s references by loosing them up. But references, can one ever have enough? This season, desire served as a pivotal touchpoint, recalibrating proposals and embracing new takes on tailoring and construction. The distinctive dresses clearly demonstrated it, potentially retail-worthy, with flowing silks or wear-anywhere cottons that provided accessible fit and construction.

Standout pieces included draped tops, skirts and plunging necklines, adding ease to the lineup. The sheer silk chiffon allowed garments to live and breathe with one another. One could call it Madsen’s art of conceal and reveal. It epitomises a fixation of quiet elegance. The label has been synthesising and refining it of late.

Fashion brands have been trying to inject more romantic appeal into their clothes. When touching on lightness—a concept luxury households admired before Madsen’s time—it’s not a fleeting trend for her. Therefore, the latest lineup feels authentically of the moment.

Elsewhere, numbers in silk organza were hand-smocked and dyed repeatedly to create crisp and graduated peach surfaces: The technique was used across a jacket and a layered crimson dress, forming structures that resembled an unfamiliar plant. The brand styling mixed velvet separates with sleek offerings, boosting interest in the neutral-coloured clothes. Glam made easy: who doesn’t want that?
