Glass checks out the newly reopened George in Mayfair

THE Birley Clubs recently announced the reopening of their iconic club, George, in Mayfair. The private members club opened this week, offering yet another stylish spot to socialise in London’s popular Mayfair district.

We had the pleasure of dropping in last week to sample their food and drink offerings whilst admiring the newly designed interiors.

Designed and spearheaded by Richard and Patricia Caring, George sets out to bring together creativity and culture in a stylish setting. It joins the likes of other iconic clubs such as Annabels and Harry’s Bar in Mayfair but has a distinctly unique character.

From the outside, the club is both decedent and discreet. All that is on display is the outdoor terrace, which is filled with tables that are paired with blue-accented furniture – a theme that runs throughout the club.

Aiming to be a home away from home, George has a laid-back atmosphere that encourages guests to unwind, let loose and even bring their dogs along! The first person to welcome me in was George the Dachshund himself, who lives at the club and is named after Mark Birley’s dog.

Being a central character to the club, there is a huge bronze sculpted art piece of the Dachshund by artist Jill Berrelowitz mounted on the wall that never fails to entertain. Eye-catching art is a recurring theme at George. Each wall is decorated with impressive modern art, some of which you might recognise. The standout piece is David Hockney’s iconic Afternoon Swimming print which hangs by the entrance of the club.

The most exciting element of George is by far its food and drinks offerings. Executive Head Chef, Marcus Eaves has introduced an exciting menu of refined Mediterranean dishes made with organic produce. Dishes such as the courgette flower stuffed with Sicilian prawns and red pepper sauce are available alongside an array of other seasonal plates. If you’re looking to host a dinner, George’s private dining room is not to be missed as it offers a more intimate setting to enjoy its foodie offerings.

In addition to its fantastic dining options, George is first and foremost a social club. The grand bar acts as a centrepiece in the club, breaking up seating areas. On the drinks menu, you’ll find a selection of Champagne, organic wine and all the spirits needed to create your favourite cocktail.

Downstairs at George is a different scene. Sexy red interiors are filled with plush sofas and furnishings. The space doubles up as a club and an intimate social space as it features a dance floor along with smaller booths that offer private pockets away from the main space.

With summer just around the corner, it’s no question that George is set to be Mayfair’s hottest spot.
