Haute Couture SS19: Dior

SET in an idyllic and enormous circus tent in the Musée Rodin, the greatest circus Dior SS19 haute couture show took place earlier this afternoon. The runway was romantically lit with strings of fairy lights, creating an ambient mood as the was about to start.

Female gymnasts dressed in two-tone black-and-white dresses formed a human arch, introducing the opening looks for the SS19 couture show.

A silk white double-breasted dress led us into the next act of the show: elegance. A pleated regal golden dress swayed on the runway, turning into liquid gold as it flowed across the runway, reflecting every light in the tent and taking, simply stunning.

Just like in any good circus, there were clowns aplenty, but none like you had ever seen before. A Dior clown is dressed in floor-length soft orange dresses, adorned with sequined flames, and equally dazzling jumpsuits worn overtop sheer shirts with ruffled collars. The burning desire – pun intended – for a new take on the circus clown translated into sharply cute high-rise trousers and a sequined bib, portraying the image of a tiger jumper through a burning hoop. Said bibs were seen throughout the collection, often worn with peter pan ruffled collar.

Clowns weren’t the only characters featured, resembling the Queen of hearts, a black bustier peaked through a sheer dress, scattered with red dots and black mesh structured detailing. This brought us to the candy-cane girl, wearing a formfitting white bodice detailed with red diagonal stripes and a structured white tutu.

What’s a circus performance without some humour? I’d be lying if I said the fake tattoo sleeves and tights didn’t make us smile just a bit.

Glitter and glam extravaganza were up next as head-to-toe sequined looks made their way through the tent causing a bedazzling moment. Blush sparkly playsuits and blazers, rhinestone dusted tights, or a multi-colour sequined layered ruffle dress, looking as if it belonged in a prestigious fashion patisserie, made their appearance in the Dior Dreams Parade.

Almost as enchanting as the collection were the sequined caps, covering the faces of the models with a layer of black gauze adorned with the sporadic rhinestone. Uncovering the model’s faces just enough to reveal the simple clown-inspired make-up look.

The piece de résistance of Maria Grazia Chiuri’s SS19 collection, was undoubtedly a soft grey cape, with its layers gracefully bouncing up and down, resembling the fascinating movement of a jellyfish. Meticulously curled chiffon detailing this was the showstopper.

The Dior Dream Parade is where the impossible comes true, and it truly was the greatest show.
