Kangaroo Island’s Southern Ocean Lodge officially reopens

AFTER nearly four years of planning, designing and construction, Baillie Lodges flagship property Southern Ocean Lodge officially reopened on the 6th of December 2023.

Located on the south coast of South Australia’s Kangaroo Island, the newly imagined lodge decorates the island’s shining limestone cliffs.

Max Pritchard – the original architect of Southern Ocean Lodge – helmed a team of like-minded individuals who worked tirelessly to make the property as beautiful as its surroundings. From minor adjustments to the addition of various extra facilities, the reopening marks a new era for Baillie Lodges’ property.

In particular, guest suites have been reoriented so that all rooms now have a view of the Southern Ocean and the island’s breath-taking landscape. Furthermore, each guest suite features a private deck, an EcoSmart fireplace and a sink-in bathtub.

Meanwhile, one of the latest additions to the property is the ultra-premium Ocean Pavilion – an exclusive four-bedroom guest hideaway. Perfect for those travelling with friends and family, the Ocean Pavilion can be treated as two separate two-bedroom suites or four.

Additionally, the Great Room terrace now features a wet-edge pool and the Southern Spa has been expanded to fit three treatment rooms, a gymnasium, a sauna and hot/cold plunge pools.

Designed with longevity in mind, Southern Ocean Lodge also prides itself on its cutting-edge technologies. Utilising rainwater capture, solar power generation, smart building materials and a remote-controlled sprinkler system, the lodge sets a high standard for other businesses within the tourism industry.

Speaking on the reopening of Southern Ocean Lodge, Mr Baillie said: “We feel very fortunate to be able to present the new-look Southern Ocean Lodge to the world. Hayley and I had lived and breathed the original lodge from the concept and planning stages to its award-winning reality, celebrated for its timeless design.

With the benefit of hindsight and learning, we saw the chance to rebuild Southern Ocean Lodge as a special chance to return the property that seemed to touch so many guests over the years and with some considered additions to take her to a next-generation traveler and a sustainable future.”

Many of the lodge’s original luxuries remain the same – the dining experiences, renowned open bar, five signature Kangaroo Island experiences and airport transfers. However, Southern Ocean Lodge promises to be an unmissable holiday location for anyone hoping to truly relish the Australian wilderness.
