LFW AW14: David Koma

David Koma is not a risk-taker. But this season he found himself somewhat thrust into the limelight, compelled to take his brand of tough-girl party pieces up a notch. The newly-appointed Mugler director had a lot to live up to, and when Miroslava Duma is watching expectedly from the sidelines, the pressure is certainly on.

So, did he rise to the challenge? Not exactly, although this is not to deem the show unsuccessful. Yes, the silhouettes were predictable, and the heavy use of leather was nothing to write home about, but Koma’s formula is a winning one, and this season’s offerings are certain to impress his army of celebrity fans.

The minor tweaks to the Koma blueprint gave the collection a fresher edge: laser-cut leather details lent all-black ensembles a beautiful delicacy, whilst jewel-tone purple pieces were gloriously bold. As with every Koma collection, these pieces are the stuff of stylists’ dreams – tough, bold, and made for the Ritas and Rihannas of the world. And as for the Mugler gig, we wait with anticipation.
