LFW AW21: Burberry Menswear

HAVING been kept inside, Riccardo Tisci has been dreaming about the outdoors. Imagining the beauty of the British countryside from the comfort of his London home, the Chief Creative Officer of Burberry became fascinated with the exploration of the unknown, the gardens, forests and woods that make up the land was something Tisci wanted to dwell on.

Inspired by the movements during the early 20th century, who formed communities to look after nature, linking humanity with the outside world, Burberry unveils their first menswear-focused collection for autumn-winter 2021.

Unveiled inside Burberry’s flagship store in London’s 121 Regent Street, the retail space transformed into the set for the show. The menswear collection both honours the British brand’s heritage while reinventing itself to fit into today’s more contemporary world. Focusing on outerwear, pieces are designed with function in mind.

Pleats, panels and fringes, echoing the freeing movement of the wind are seen throughout, while layering adds further dimensions to the silhouettes. Tailoring stands strong as the classic trench coat and suits are shaped with precision presenting the perfect balance between tradition and innovation as slim-fit two-pieces are seen next to cycling shorts.

Returning once again, Tisci’s Animal Kingdom sees itself evolve with new prints and shapes with a nod to the inspiration to the collection. Photographic mink and fox-fur shirts dance between deconstructed duffle coats that are hooded with faux-fur fabrications. Deers are seen embroidered into knitted beanies, and footwear sees hints to hooves.

The colour palette stays testament to the long history of Burberry with the Burberry beige, dark brown, rich burgundy, grey and subtle hints of pale pink and blue weave in and out of each piece of the collection.

With the prospect of a time where we can all enjoy the outdoors together finally in sight, Burberry has given us our first glimmer of what it will be like. This season, Tisci hasn’t tried anything too experimental and kept within the lines of what Burberry stands for by creating durable outerwear pieces along with fun accessories and splashes of colour here and there.

This collection is put together and strong, and makes me look forward to going on a walk with a Burberry trench coat on in the not too distant future.
