PRESENTED at the NEWGEN in partnership with TikTok event space at the Old Selfridges Hotel – the Yuhan Wang SS22 collection acted as an elegy to both the strength and vulnerability of women. Central Saint Martins MA graduate Yuhan Wang turned her rage over the recent incidents of violence against women, including the murder of Sarah Everard, into the inspiration and fuel behind her collection.
Floral printed, leather gun holsters were slung around the waists of various models strolling down the runway, which seemed to beg the question: how does one stay tender and soft while constantly having to be on guard?
Signature brand motifs such as ruching, delicate lace fabrics, floral prints, exaggeratedly pointed toed shoes and free-flowing silhouettes made a reappearance. An off the shoulder dress cut out of a butterfly printed fabric was divergent from the usual floral but not from the brand’s feminine aesthetic.
In addition to a watercolour-esque horse print and numerous lace fabrics, the butterfly print also covered the models’ legs in the form of tights. Doily and mesh baby doll dresses were contrasted by floral, embroidered peplum suit jackets in the 33 look collection.
