NYFW 14: Betsey Johnson

Betsey Johnson’s A/W catwalk show hosted New York City for fashion week was broadcast live in Times Square, a dream come true for the theatrical designer.

True to the brand’s DNA, model after model with long flowing hair extensions smiled as they pranced down the runway in various rock ‘n roll ensembles in every colour and pattern under the sun, accessories a major focus of the collection.

No room for classic and safe black outfits here.  Think bright yellow knee-high socks, fluorescent lace full bodysuits, electric blue leopard print bags and boots, Barbie pink fur stoles, fishnets, beanies, furs and chains.

Best known for her whimsical designs, Betsey Johnson is an American fashion designer whose trademark is to do a cartwheel at the conclusion of her fashion shows.  She has been an active contributor to the industry since the 1960s, when she won the Mademoiselle Guest Editor Contest and soon after opened her own boutique called Betsey Bunky Nini.  At 70 years old, Johnson is currently finishing shooting a reality TV show last summer XOX Betsey Johnson with her daughter Lulu Johnson that aired on the Style network.

Of live broadcast, Johnson says, “I always want more people to see the show, This is an ‘I can’t believe my life’ moment for me.”
