YOU’D be forgiven for momentarily believing Tommy Hilfiger had built a time machine to a Harlem of decades past. Playful trumpet and saxophone players begin a funky tune, while dancers move rhythmically atop a classic New York stoop and lights flicker to the beat of bongo players. A retro car full of musicians smoothly stops a few feet from the front row of TOMMYNOW’s see-now-buy-now AW19 show.
Toto, we’re not in present day New York City anymore.
What makes the second collaboration between Tommy Hilfiger and 23-year-old global sensation, Zendaya, so revolutionary is how it celebrates individuality, confidence and diversity. Models of all different shapes, sizes, ethnicities and ages rocked the catwalk, seamlessly redefining beauty norms. Newcomers were woven in and amongst familiar faces, which included Alton Mason, Sara Sampaio, Candice Swanepoel, Winnie Harlow and Grace Bol.
Emblematic 1970s styles played a huge influence on the entire collection, which proves to be as bold as the empowering foundational themes. Wide-leg pants, whimsical scarfs, velvet blazers and faux furs combine to create timeless silhouettes. Warm burgundy hues mixed with metallics and monochrome palettes ensure each look remains fresh.
Polka dots, gingham, plaid and snakeskin prints were all featured in a fair few of the eclectic looks, which of course included Alton Mason’s striking python suit. Another stand-out feature was the presence of high-length leather boots. Whether models were sporting midi skirts, tapered pants or long flowing dresses, everything was visually elevated by an accompanying pair of statement boots.
An incredible moment took place when the pregnant Ashley Graham sashayed down the runway. Having only announced she was expecting last month, the 31-year-old model gave it her all in a stunning black polka dot dress, cinched chunky belt, statement scarf and a tilted wide-rimmed hat. A true vision of poise.
Despite theatrics and undeniably beautiful clothing, it has to be the landmark Apollo Theatre that truly takes this collection up a notch. Once the venue of choice for music icons like Aretha Franklin and Otis Redding, the historic music hall adds a tangible dose of soul essential to bringing the vision of Zendaya and Tommy Hilfiger to life. With smiles on their faces, as well as a whole lot of groove in their step, each model brought a unique funky flow to their timeless apparel. With expert styling from world-class image architect, Law Roach, the show couldn’t help but be a resounding success.
Tommy Hilfiger and Zendaya created a AW19 collection that totally embodied the mission they originally set out to accomplish. It is diverse, it is encompassing, it exudes confidence and fearlessness. And altogether, it is the perfect way to say goodbye to a fantastic two-season creative companionship.
