NYFW SS22: Moschino

IF FASHION is meant to be a form of fantasy, Jeremy Scott indeed wanted us to dream. Presenting a collection soaked in nostalgia from our childhoods, the creative director of Moschino took us back to when days were far simpler – further back than this foreign world of pre-pandemic we all reminisce about.

Titled Ladies Who Lunch, the American designer has abandoned Milan for New York this season to bring the Manhattan women a slice of fun for their afternoons. Understanding the necessity of classic suits and separates, Scott has reimagined founder Franco Moschino’s version of these staples.

Painted with novelty and motifs an illustration of nursery rhymes comes to life with prints that depict bears flying kites, poodles in flower crowns and seals balancing beach balls and in the words of the designer himself, “sweet dreams are indeed made of these”.

Scalloped edges, character buttons, purses clearly influenced by Mary Had a Little Lamb and patchwork animal quilts are all building blocks to this fantasy.

However, beyond the toys and stuffed animals is the undeniable chic nature of what Franco Moschino originally created. Widened u-neck collars, bustier bralettes and babydoll coats were highlights and instantly recognisable looks that will have ladies who luncheon drooling for more.

It wouldn’t be Moschino without the irony, and it wouldn’t be Jeremy Scott without a little kitsch, but together it does work. Whether it be new-mums on Fifth Avenue drinking tea with a milk-bottle clutch or girls partying in matching hot pants, this childhood dream is one you don’t want to wake-up from.
