NYFW SS24: Dion Lee

NOTORIOUS for his subversive club-wear designs, Dion Lee’s spring-summer 2024 collection mixes fluid sensuality with an industrial, utilitarian aesthetic. The namesake label calls upon its classic codes to depict a rebirth of sultry workwear-inspired pieces.

Having always been a trailblazer in the world of party-wear, this collection explores more business-orientated silhouettes for the Australian brand’s contemporary, metropolitan customer.

Marrying alluring sensuality with undeniable pragmatism, the SS24 collection highlights Lee’s ability to transgress traditional club-wear. With an emphasis on mechanical adornment, the collection is scattered with silver hardware pieces playing pivotal parts in the garments’ construction.

Various tools, wrenches and more can be found shaping and contouring models’ bodies in an ode to industrial experimentation.

Oversized, sturdy boots embellished with large, functional pockets are paired with high-cut shorts and bodysuits in order to accentuate the brand’s focus on sculptural silhouettes. Meanwhile, shimmering, crushed silver parachute mini dresses worked in perfect harmony alongside Both and Ancuta Sarca’s specialised footwear apparel.

Delving deeper into the industrial narrative of the collection, a stand-out look featured an orange bag formed from cable wire that was slung around a model’s shoulder in a relaxed, light-hearted manner.

Despite the compilation of workwear-orientated pieces, Lee also featured some delicate, evening-appropriate attire. Gentle, lace bolero-inspired pieces and slinky dresses are paired with chunky, silver chains in order to retain the focus on practical adaptability.

Additionally, sophisticated blazers are paired with embroidered hosiery and undergarments to further explore the collection’s natural dichotomy.

Launching a capsule collection with Romanian-born footwear designer, Ancuta Sarca, the latest offering transforms traditional, conservative boots and kitten heels into show-stopping, bold masterpieces.

As an upcoming, London-based brand, Ancuta Sarca has many supporters within the fashion world – including the likes of Rihanna and Bella Hadid. Up-cycling and re-imagining disused fabrics into new footwear designs, the designer is bound to gain even more of an impressive following by working alongside talents such as Dion Lee.

Similarly, Lee called upon Parisian-based Both for further footwear support. Both places an emphasis on the importance of rubber and therefore contributed to the combat boots and lace-ups found throughout the collection.

The brand’s SS24 collection perfectly encapsulates Lee’s instantly recognisable style and demonstrates his affinity for creating seductive, practical designs.
