NYFW SS24: Private Policy

COLLABORATING with the non-profit organisation Reef Life Foundation, Private Policy draws attention to the distressing issue of coral reef eradication with its spring-summer 2024 In My Coral World collection.

The New York-based genderless apparel brand, known for addressing global environmental concerns with its designs, continues to tackle important ecological issues. Having previously highlighted problems such as deforestation, animal migration and the enslavement of fishermen, the brand demonstrates the ways in which fashion can act as a platform for bringing about global environmental change.

Siying Qu and Haoran Li, the creative directors of Private Policy, are renowned for their ability to marry pressing topics with cutting-edge designs and innovation.

For its autumn-winter 2023 collection, Private Policy looked into digital garments and the metaverse to analyse the importance of technology in relation to sustainable fashion. The brand’s SS24 collection explores technology in a more tangible sense.

Taking inspiration from deep-sea diving equipment, mesh apparel and life vests, the collection looks into the highly specialised equipment one utilises when traversing underwater landscapes.

Additionally, the brand has replicated wetsuit silhouettes and curves in order to pay homage to those working ceaselessly to protect these fragile environments.

The latest seasonal offering contrasts this utilitarian sea-related workwear with neon pink, recycled-polyester sequinned looks in order to convey the importance of coral reef preservation. The bright, sparkling designs act as a visual reminder of the colour and vibrancy our coral reefs once possessed.

By juxtaposing luxurious satin, colourful gingham and delicate accessories with pragmatic, sensible counterparts, the collection paints a picture of the current ecological situation.

Partnering with Reef Life Foundation for this collection, Private Policy reiterates its active role in protecting the environment. Reef Life Foundation utilises Oceanite technology to restore coral reef ecosystems.

Oceanite is a complex material made with a specific mixture of minerals which can be used as the base substrate for forming man-made coral reefs. The Oceanite structures encourages growth and diversity within the new ecosystem at a rapid rate thanks to its porous composition.

As part of the partnership, Private Policy has designed a newspaper print tee featuring various infographics from Reef Life Foundation. The infographics include facts and tips on preserving and safeguarding our coral reefs. Each time a Private Policy x Reef Life Foundation tee is sold, an Oceanite block will be placed in an area of desperate need.

Having unveiled the collection during New York Fashion Week, Private Policy continues to effortlessly exhibit its focus on social justice and unity in a contemporary, thought-provoking manner.
