PFW AW14: Yang Li

Branded as a technician, working and reworking fit and structure to create, Yang Li presented an ambitious, structural collection for Fall 2014 Ready to Wear. Dotted with commercially viable menswear looks, the women’s collection showed tailored luxurious textiles. Li’s most dramatic moments hinted at Hollywood moments, like the patchwork fur ball skirt that could double as a lap robe on a sleigh ride. His take on the ubiquitous trench coat was sumptuous in its womanly curves. And what woman wouldn’t turn down the opportunity to be a modern Anna Karenina with a refined waistcoat belted atop of a full skirt – all in rich, silky black?

Li’s collection doesn’t neglect the modern minimalist, either. Both by staying in a deep palette and by using those same fabrics, he managed to send a sleek tomboy down the runway in edgy luxury, if there is such a thing. Rippling to the floor, trousers with already open at the knees were the perfect finish for the urban romantic. For the ultimate simplicity, headwear on both men and women called on an Amish or Quaker aesthetic. The hats were the one note that felt off kilter in an otherwise smoothly cohesive collection.
