Rich and royal. That is how the Dries Van Noten’s AW15 collection can be described if one was allowed two words only. But, thankfully, here this is not the case. And so we can indulge in descriptions of Van Noten’s truly majestic brocades with several patterns that made the models look like members of an ancient Chinese dynasty. They were worn together mis-matched or layered over each other in the forms of jackets or coats worn over tops, skirts and dresses over trousers which also evoked a bohemian or gypsy-like vibe. The Chinese motif was also apparent in jackets with embroidered dragons.
The regal inspiration did not stop there and other used materials were velvet, fur and feather paired with long leather gloves, tight and fitting like a second skin that helped to create a very feminine look. The coats, some with sleeves some without, were belted to accentuate the waist and the female figure. Some garments were embellished with big flashy sequins to add to all the glamour that was already happening on the runway.
The rich materials were contrasted with trench coats, simple shirts and wide loose-fitted trousers in utilitarian style. The models’ necks were decorated with necklaces – some with a big flower and feathers, others were simple yet chunky – and their feet with matching brocade high-heeled sandals or ankle boots.
