Styling It In with Glass

THE YEAR 2020 has become one which is already momentous in history, and we are still in the hear of it … Amid a global pandemic, the world has been turned upside down with months of lockdown, self-quarantining, and a pause on life as normal. This is an extraordinary moment in time and will be remembered for decades to come.

Future generations will be fascinated to know how people lived, how they dressed and how they survived during this unique era. In this piece, Glass has asked editors, designers, talents and our contributors how they have adjusted to this new way of life. What follows is a vivid picture of a time of remarkable confinement …

OLGA YANUL
Stylist

What are you wearing?
I’m trying to be comfortable, yet still trying to look good. I wear lots of jeans and t-shirts. I also love vintage silk blouses. I’ve also tried dressing up for myself sometimes – it’s a great time to try different looks that you always wanted to!

What are you reading/watching?
I mostly articles and things online. At the minute I am going through my rack of magazines and reading all the articles I didn’t have time to read. I’m inspired by architecture and design – so this quarantine is the perfect time for me to read up about it.

How are you keeping healthy?
My husband and I are cooking most things at home. We use lots of vegetables and good quality products. I am also letting myself sleep a little longer than usual – so my body can restore after non-stop traveling in between fashion weeks. I do try to exercise more and love walking my dogs.

Has the lockdown inspired you to explore something new?
I’m enjoying gardening a lot! I got a lavender plant for the balcony and I love its smell and color.

What is the first thing you will do when life returns to normal?
Reconnect with friends and have a nice long dinner at someone’s place or favourite restaurant. Of course, I can’t wait for the freedom to travel again also.

Actor best known for Amazon’s Upload (2020)
What are you wearing?
I’m wearing my favorite Levi vintage jeans and recently I’ve been obsessed with the color olive green so I love my Signature 8 crop top with flowy sleeves. I always layer jewelry so I’m wearing necklaces and a gold ring by Mejuri.
What are you reading/watching?
I just finished watching the Harry Potter movies. I love the books and hadn’t seen the films in a while so it was nice going on that journey again. I recently bought a collection of Shakespeare plays, so I’m excited to dive into that.

How are you keeping healthy?
What’s helped me immensely is having a schedule so I’ll go to sleep at 10 and wake up at 6 am. Actually, I just fostered an 8-month-old kitten named Keeva, who likes to put her paw on my face around 5:30 am to her breakfast so she’s been helping me stay on schedule. After I wake up and feed her, I journal, meditate, and then do some sort of exercise. Getting those 3 things done in the morning, even if the rest of the day I just lounge around, at least I know I did those few things for myself.

Has the lockdown inspired you to explore something new?
Lockdown has inspired me to cook a lot more and try new recipes. I love cooking but I normally don’t have a lot of time to do it so now, it’s been really wonderful to find new recipes and experiment. I started making my own almond milk and then using the pulp to make muffins. It’s been a lot of fun.

What is the first thing you will do when life returns to normal?
Ooo, the first thing I’ll when we’re no longer isolating, will be brunch with friends. I miss my friends immensely and I love a good brunch so combining the two will feel so amazing to just hug them, eat and laugh together.

TOMI SAARIO
Finnish Singer and Songwriter

What are you wearing?
I’m mostly looking for comfort at this time so my fits are very much based on that. I’m wearing a navy blue jacket from Human Scales, a basic T-shirt from Pull&Bear and the rest is actually from Zara.
What are you reading/watching?
I’ve been watching a lot of series. I just finished Narcos (2015) and Mindhunter (2017). Pretty dark stuff but I loved them both. I’ve also been reading Can’t Hurt Me by David Goggins. That guy is nuts!
How are you keeping healthy?
Everybody’s been advised to stay away from gyms for the time being so I’ve been doing some light workouts at home with just my body weight. I’ve also played some golf and disc golf. Both are good sports at a time of social distancing.
Has the lockdown inspired you to explore something new?
Yes, it has! I just released my second single Don’t Hurt Yourself and I actually filmed the music video for it in my flat in Finland. I did it remotely with my photographer Max Motel who’s in Germany. We used two iPhones, Skype, and some empty toilet paper rolls to do it. It turned out pretty awesome! Sometimes working with these kinds of boundaries allows you to think without any.
What is the first thing you will do when life returns to normal?
’m really looking forward to is touring, as performing in front of my fans and feeding off of that energy is the most exciting part about being an artist. I have a tour booked in for February 2021, so fingers crossed we are allowed to do it.

KATIE ANN MCGUIGAN
Designer

What are you wearing?
Unfortunately, I’m away from my London closet but my tie-dye joggers and hoodie sets have been the ultimate comfort whilst working from home

What are you reading/watching?
I catch up on the news every evening, but I do also try to consume other things to keep my mind at bay. Focusing on books has been tough, but I would recommend anyone that is feeling the same to give Calypso by David Sedaris ago.

How are you keeping healthy?
I try to maintain a routine. I start and end my day at the same time, maintain my meal times and most importantly take my dog for a walk. The fresh air and the exercise does me a world of good.

Has the lockdown inspired you to explore something new?
I have always wanted to expand on what my brand has to offer, so I’m currently resuming my partnership with Orior Furniture, to create a lifestyle range. I feel now more than ever home life is vital, so this project made perfect sense.

What is the first thing you will do when life returns to normal?
I can’t wait to see my family and friends. Hug them and have a real catch up, rather than seeing them through on a screen. I am also excited to move back to London and get back to my studio.

NELSON LEE
Actor best known for Mulan (2020) and CW’s Stargirl (2020).

What are you wearing?
A vintage tiger print tank top from New York, French Terry Joggers by Bonobos, and flip flops by Locals in Hawaii.
What are you reading (watching)?
Still slugging through 2666 and watching lots of Terrace House on Netflix
How are you keeping healthy?
My amazing trainer, Chris Miller, has a system called Primal Thenics which I’ve been using at home ever since the quarantine started. It’s been kicking my butt and keeping me sane during all this craziness.
Has the lockdown inspired you to explore something new?
Reaching out to people I haven’t spoken to in years. We can so easily forget to stay in touch with the people we care about in our lives because we get busier with our lives. Being locked inside forces an introspection that makes you realize these oversights very quickly, and you start taking stock in the things and the people that truly matter to you. And I learned about the wonders of Zoom.
What is the first thing you will do when life returns to normal?
Get on a plane and see my mother in Canada.

SEBASTIANO PIGAZZI
Actor best known for We Are Who We Are (2020), Stupid Cupid (2019)

What are you wearing?
I am wearing Pink and white button-down shirts from Davide Cenci and white pants from Slowear. I’ve been wearing a lot of versatile clothes. Clothes that I feel comfortable in but also feel productive. I think I dress practically the same as I did before the lockdown.

What are you reading(watching)?
I’ve been watching at least one film a day. Mostly classics that I haven’t seen yet. I’ve been on a quest to become a cinephile and this is a great time to try to work towards that.

How are you keeping healthy?
I’ve been running, doing HIIT workouts at home, trying to eat a salad for lunch every day and I even managed to squeeze in a few juice cleanses.

Has the lockdown inspired you to explore something new?
Absolutely. I’ve started to design some of my own clothes. The lockdown has given me more time to explore different ideas and sketch a few things I might like to wear.

What is the first thing you will do when life returns to normal?
Probably go to the movies. There’s something magical about the cinema.

AZURA LOVISA
Designer

What are you wearing?
I’ve been living in slip dresses, my galabeya from Egypt, which is a long loose men’s cotton tunic, and workout clothes.

What are you reading/watching?
I’m reading Design for the Real World by Victor Papanek, and Near to the Wild Heart by Clarice Lispector

How are you keeping healthy?
I kayak as often as possible, as I’m isolating with my family in Miami near the water. My friends and I have also started a daily-ish workout routine via video chat, with each of us taking turns to lead a class. I’m getting produce directly from a local farm to support them during this time and reduce food waste, so I’ve been making a lot of great fresh food.

Has the lockdown inspired you to explore something new?
I haven’t picked up anything new yet, but I have gotten back into painting and drawing, which I haven’t had much time for in the past few years.

What is the first thing you will do when life returns to normal?
Spend a whole long night dancing with friends until I’m exhausted, sweaty and ecstatic.

ANNA OSMEKHINA
Founder and designer of TTSWTRS

What are you wearing?
I am wearing a black bra top and trousers from TTSWTRS – my favorite combination. I love wearing these at home.

What are you reading/ watching?
I’m trying to read Becoming Supernatural: How Common People Are Doing The Uncommon by Joe Dispenza, but it’s not that easy. I am also rewatching Audrey Hepburn films.

How are you keeping healthy?
Well, firstly and most importantly, I’m staying home. I am also taking lots of vitamins and eating a lot of fruit and vegetables during intermittent fasting.

Has the lockdown inspired you to explore something new?
Before it was almost impossible for me to spend even ten days in one city without having to move on to the next. This lockdown has turned my viewpoint inside out. It has inspired me to make several decisions for the future of my brand. I want to create collections with fewer items, not abiding the deadlines and seasonality of fashion week. I want to give myself more time to design to avoid being derivative or repetitive. I feel that once things are back to normal we are all going to need to hit the reset button.

What is the first thing you’ll do when life returns to normal?
I’m dreaming of going to Berlin, I’ve never been to before. I want to travel, get a dog, and start yoga.

Actor best known for Justin Simien’s Bad Hair (2020)
What are you wearing?
It’s funny because I’ve gotten dressed nearly every day of the quarantine, wearing a lot of the dresses that I’ve put aside for special occasions. I believe in the saying “you look good, you feel good”, it’s reverse psychology on myself.
What are you reading (watching)?
I’m reading Lovecraft Country and As A Man Thinketh, and I’m quickly becoming obsessed with I May Destroy You (2020), everything about it is brilliant.
How are you keeping healthy?
My mental and emotional health are always a priority for me. So I’m meditating, getting in nature when I can, and taking days off of social media.
Has the lockdown inspired you to explore something new?
I’d been having writer’s block for a while, and during this time a plethora of songs have poured out of me. So I’ve been writing and recording some really cool music.
What is the first thing you will do when life returns to normal?
Go out to eat! I miss restaurants, I miss people watching, I miss really well-made food. I’m ready!

LAUREN ESPOSITO
Actor best known for The legend of The Five (2020) and the upcoming Swimming For God (2020)

What are you wearing?
Leggings – Plura Activewear
Top – H&M

What are you reading (watching)?
Currently reading Untamed by Glennon Doyle. During quarantine, I’ve also read Girl, Wash Your Face by Rachel Hollis. I have loved both books!

How are you keeping healthy?
By eating a variety of whole foods (all plant-based) every day and making it a priority to get in a lot of veggies and fruits throughout my day. I have also made sure to be working out at least 5 days per week and taking long walks every day to keep my body moving.

Has the lockdown inspired you to explore something new?
Lockdown has inspired me to finally get my Personal Training certification and to read more. I am always reading scripts but have never been much of a book reader. I’ve been loving non-fiction books, especially self-help books for women and entrepreneurs.

What is the first thing you will do when life returns to normal?
Go out for a romantic dinner with my lovely boyfriend at our favourite restaurant in LA.

Best known for Netflix’s The Babysitters Club (2020)
What are you wearing?
Top by Ulla Johnson, vintage recycled Levi’’ and handcrafted earrings by Erik Maes (Esty).
What are you reading (watching)?
I’ve been reading more Babysitter’s Club books; there’s 131 in the series and I’m more than halfway through. I like to imagine how each book would be adapted into a show—What would they keep in? What would they update?
How are you keeping healthy?
Lockdown has made me get creative with what I do to challenge myself and stay happy. I never imagined I would like cooking and barbequing so much, but I’m really into it, so that’s a silver lining. I’ve been trying out all the trending exercise videos to keep active. I’ll facetime with my friends and we do the workouts together to make it more fun.
Has the lockdown inspired you to explore something new?
Now that I have more time, I’ve been catching up on old TV series. I watched Friends, 90210, The Wonder Years, Bosom Buddies, Freaks and Geeks– some of the classics during the 80s and 90s.
What is the first thing you will do when life returns to normal?
First thing I’ll do— Travel somewhere on a plane. Maybe NYC for a few Broadway shows. I miss going to the theatre, it was part of my regular routine.
CAMILLA WOLFSON
Best known for Netflix’s The Kissing Booth 2 (2020)
What are you wearing?
Top by ThriftyGirlSA, trousers by Zouhar Designs and thrifted Nike Air Force Ones.
My everyday style is always comfort over anything else so my quarantine looks haven’t deviated much: A mix of sweats and cropped tees; I love bold textures and playing with them, mixing corduroys with velvet and pure cashmere, cotton, some denim. I value longevity in all my pieces and just to make it feel a bit more like me, I’ll add some cool socks, jewellery or paint my nails a cool colour.  Most of my wardrobe is second hand or thrifted so I don’t always know the labels behind the garments I wear.
What are you reading (watching)?
I’ve just finished reading A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce and have just started reading Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami.
How are you keeping healthy?
I’m keeping healthy by trying not to focus too much on keeping healthy. With what is currently going on in the world, I think we make the mistake of putting too much pressure on ourselves to accomplish the same goals we had a few months ago, even our health goals. We need room to put on a bit of weight, eat a bit more badly than we would usually or spend too much time on screens and going to bed late. I obviously think it’s important to stay as healthy as possible whilst facing a global pandemic, but we shouldn’t sacrifice our mental health in a time nobody could prepare for both physically and mentally.
Has the lockdown inspired you to explore something new?
Totally! It’s great that with nobody around in lockdown, there’s also no one to impress if you don’t completely succeed at whatever it is you’re trying to explore. That being said, it creates a kind of fearlessness in self-exploration which I’m hoping to carry out into everything I do once life returns to some semblance of ‘normality.’
What is the first thing you will do when life returns to normal?
Definitely go to a show! I’ve really been missing theatre and live performance. There will be so many more stories to tell once all of this is over and I can’t wait to see that being reflected in the poetry and art spaces.
ANNA MAICHE
Best known for Netflix’s Tiny Pretty Things (2020).
What are you wearing?
Levi’s jeans, Everlane shirt, and my dad’s old belt (socks were a gift from my sister, she pretty much only calls me Banana)
What are you reading/watching?
I’m reading Fall of Giants by Ken Follett. It’s an amazing historical novel, meshing together fiction and factual events. I’m so fascinated by world history but I find it hard to follow and Ken does a great job at adding that emotional connection between you, the characters, and the events which help a ton. It’s been an excellent addition to my library (thanks mom and dad!). And when I’m craving something a bit lighter I’ll read The Tao of Pooh and The Te of Piglet, that’s a great one. I’m a slow reader, one or two books at a time works perfectly for me.
How are you keeping healthy?
Sculpt by Emily Tyson and surfing. The online Sculpt Elite classes are so hard but feel so great, I do them every morning. Surfing has been a great way for me to get outside and have some fun while keeping a safe distance from others. Although I should definitely mention that for the first few weeks of quarantine I did absolutely no exercising. I also wake up at 7:00 am every day, I think my body is loving it (something I never thought to be possible).
Has the lockdown inspired you to explore something new?
Crocheting. Oh goodness, there’s nothing more satisfying than finishing a crochet project. I’m also learning to skateboard… it’s not going well.
What is the first thing you will do when life returns to normal?
Hug. My. Loved ones.
Best known for Netflix’s Umbrella Academy(2020)
What are you wearing?
I’ve been keeping it really simple with a focus on comfort. It’s tempting to only wear sweats when I’m home so much, but throwing on my favourite jeans and a slouchy top with a couple accessories and spritz of Byredo (my current perfume obsession) makes me feel more put together and like myself. And when I head out for a walk, I throw on my oversized black denim All Saints jacket and Allbird sneakers.
What are you reading (watching)?
Right now I’m almost finished reading a book called ‘Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine’, it’s quirky and funny and beautifully written. I love reading and it’s one thing I’ve been excited to have more time to do right now. I’ve also been working my way through my long list of shows, it feels impossible to ever get caught up! I’m currently watching Season 3 of Ozark which is incredible, and up next is Killing Eve.
How are you keeping healthy?
I’m happy to say that I’ve managed to get into my best shape during quarantine, working out has really kept me sane! I have been doing HiiT/Barre workout videos 5 or 6 times a week with some yoga mixed in. I find staying active helps me be a little more health conscious with what I eat throughout the day too which is good because I went a little baked-goods-crazy at the start of quarantine…thankfully I’ve settled into more of a balance! I’ve also been doing a lot of meditating to feel more grounded, and have been enjoying going for lots of hikes to get a weekly dose of nature.
Has the lockdown inspired you to explore something new?
I’ve gotten really into cooking. It’s something I’ve always enjoyed but with the focus switching to eating out less, it’s been perfect timing to play a little more in the kitchen. I love to eat plant-based and have been trying lots of new recipes or free styling using whatever we have left in the fridge and pantry to create more space between grocery trips.
What is the first thing you will do when life returns to normal?
Hop on a plane back to Bermuda (where I grew up) – I have never gone this long without visiting the island and my parents and I can’t wait until things settle down so I can get back there! But I also am really looking forward to things normalising again so I can get back to work too, I miss being on set and collaborating with people.
