FOUNDED by April Gargiulo in 2013, Vintner’s Daughter is a California-based skincare brand that has quality and craftsmanship at the heart of it. And, yes you’ve guessed it – April has a background in winemaking, hence the commitment to quality ingredients.
This ethos hasn’t gone unnoticed as it’s built a loyal following including the likes of fresh-faced beauties from Gwyneth Paltrow and Tracee Ellis Ross to Naomi Watts and Hailey Bieber.

Central to the brand are nutrient-rich botanicals that are specially selected to amplify the well-being of the skin, and in April’s words to “supercharge the skin’s own powers of regeneration, balance and radiance.” And in this vein, the brand has launched its limited-edition perfume oil, Understory vol. 2.
A unisex, hand-blended perfume oil, it’s crafted in small batches and housed in a collectable bottle. Like every creation from Vintner’s Daughter, it honours the power of the living world, and consists of the finest whole plant ingredients. Expect top notes of violet, jasmine, and rose, teamed with earthy mid notes of conifers and bay, and this deepens with moss and petals for the base.
April says, “Inspired by the ancient world of the Northern California Redwood forests, it explores the liminal space between the forest canopy and the sacred ground below. The scent is not one that announces itself loudly, but rather elegantly and intimately connects to the wearer.”

The name Understory nods to the natural world too, referring to the lower layer of a forest’s ecosystem — a lush layer of mosses, ferns, fungi and flora that form a centre of balance between the treetops above and roots below.
To further enhance the connection with nature, it was a natural move — quite literally – to involve artist MarSha Yi Robinson, whose illustrations feature on the bottle. “Marsha is an artist and designer who thoughtfully approaches the natural world through her work. We felt a deep resonance with her philosophy, process and beautiful work. We are forever grateful for her participation in this project,” says April.
