MFW AW21: Tod’s

WALTER Chiapponi continued his individualistic expansion of Tod’s’ vocabulary this season, with an unexpected sporty twist on the label’s laid-back Italian classics.

Filmed at the Galleria Massimo De Carlo in Milan, designed by Piero Portaluppi, who also created the Villa Necchi, a gem of Milanese modernist architecture long associated with Tod’s, the lineup saw the brand’s heritage craftsmanship collide with functionality and voluptuous couture-inspired shapes. The result? Timeless garments that offer both utility and fashion-forward flair in equal measure.

Supple leather-trimmed trench coats, worn over slouchy knitted trousers, were injected with a feminine touch through cascading ruffles at the neck, creating a cape-like silhouette.

Tailoring was relaxed yet rebellious, while quilting and padding exaggerated the lines of cropped leather duvet jackets, sheepskin coats and midi dresses.

Accessories were, expectably, plentiful. The brand’s iconic T Timeless bag was ballooned to new proportions and appeared alongside a shiny leather Oboe and Hobo bag and the small Kate shoulder bag, adorned with decorative flat chains.

Men’s shoes were two-toned and buckle-fastening while, demure pointy shoes with cone-shaped kitten heels accompanied the womenswear.

Slowly but surely, Chiaponni is revolutionising the luxury label and, in doing so, redefining Italian elegance with charming spontaneity and an amped-up edge.
