The Barbican presents Another Kind of Life: Photography on the Margins


THE Barbican presents Another Kind of Life: Photography on the Margins, a collection of powerful images from the 20th and 21st century which examine the dialogue between art and society, addressing themes of gender, sexuality, addiction, youth culture and minorities.

Another Kind of Life features the work of 20 remarkable photographers from the 1950’s to the current day, including work by Bruce Davidson, Paz Errázuriz, Casa Susanna, Larry Clark, Mary Ellen Mark, Boris Mikhailov, Daido Moriyama and Dayanita Singh. Bringing together over 300 works, the exhibition includes vintage and contemporary prints, archival material, specialist magazines, rare film and photo books, from leading photographers who developed these bodies of works spanning over months, years or even decades.

Part of the Barbican’s 2018 programme The Art of Change, which addresses how artists respond to the revolution in the social and political state, the exhibition poses questions about the role artists play in portraying a visual representation of subcultures during a time of significant global uncertainty.
