Indo-Chinese flavours come to Soho – Glass dines at Fatt Pundit

INDIAN or Chinese for dinner? Fatt Pundit, a sleek, modern space in the heart of Soho, offers the best of both worlds with its take on Indo-Chinese cuisine. This buzzy, young dining spot offers an introduction to the traditions of Hakka cooking, typically found in the Indian city of Kolkata. Originating from the Chinese province of Canton, the Hakka people brought their food to West Bengal, which resulted in a combination of traditional Chinese techniques with bold Indian flavours. The restaurant’s jolly name mixes the common Chinese surname Fatt with the Indian word Pundit (a scholar).

The bar at Fatt Pundit

The menu at Fatt Pundit revolves around a diverse mix of small plates, nodding to the way in which Hakka food is usually served street-style. During our recent Saturday night visit, we started with the must-have momos  – the signature Indo-Chinese dish of tasty, steamed dumplings. The goat with garam masala proved to be an authentic filling, as is the mixed vegetable option. Crackling spinach with pomegranate and sweet yoghurt – maybe the best dish of the night – was a beautiful accompaniment to these delicious appetizers.

The main veggie dishes are particularly punchy. We went for the popcorn cauliflower – light and crispy florets served with a smoky dip – and the sticky sesame vegetables, which showed off a rich, sweet-and-sour tanginess. Seafood lovers will also be very happy here. Fatt Pundit’s monkfish curry is a truly delightful dish – and comforting to boot.

The restaurant has a cute bar, so popping in for snacks and drinks is most definitely a great option, should you not want to sit down for the evening. The upbeat staff are most accommodating too, which made for excellent service throughout our meal.

Fatt Pundit should be your next Soho stop-off – for an exciting and currently underrepresented cuisine in the capital.
