Combining both Oriental and Western influences, Apu Jan has created his SS14 collection entitled The Signal which includes a romanticised colour scheme of fuchsia and coral juxtaposed against a harsh black. The oriental floral scheme is placed together with westernised tailoring to create a mix of culture. The collection gradually changes from pretty to bold, introducing more and more dark pieces which dominate over the continuum of pinks and reds.
For S/S 14, Apu Jan has used the iconic trend of floral, which is notorious for Spring/Summer collections but has added a twist by using city chic style. With splashes of white over the black, the garments are reminiscent of a city landscape which is thrust against the natural colouring of the floral design. “The Signal” is the chosen title of the collection because Apu Jan has aimed to bring together both the signals of the natural world and of manmade electronics.
The collection focuses on the cut and fit of each outfit, with tailored shirts and jackets alongside loose fabric to create the illusion of blooming flowers. This juxtaposition of nature vs. man can even be seen in the hair styling, with the models all supporting natural hair towards the ends and gelled back, sleek roots. Apu Jan has created a collection that emphasises and embraces femininity, in every form; showcasing designs that bring together his oriental roots as well as modern influences.
