THERE’s a certain energy about Amsterdam, a city which needs no introduction. A pool of contemporary attitudes, which have attracted waves of visitors for decades, have in turn been mirrored by the W Hotel in the Dutch Capital. Located in the midst of the intoxicating metropolis, W has curated a residence which perfectly marries modernity with the charming historical influences of the city, culminating in a vacation perfectly suited to weekend partygoers and city-breakers alike.
It isn’t much longer after my arrival in Amsterdam that I’m stood overlooking the city from the colourful comforts of my room. The hotel, which occupies two stunning historic landmarks, has an indisputable character which resonates with the landscape it resides within, and somehow fuses tranquillity with the liveliness of the streets below. One thing to note is the abstract interior design of the room, which generates a playful element of uniqueness, perfectly setting the tone for the rest of my visit.

The Duchess
Staying at the W Hotel, you certainly feel at the centre of the action, which is why I consider it the perfect luxury vacation for couples, or those visiting the city for its laidback energy. Though just a 300-meter walk to Dam Square, it would not be difficult to become a recluse within the walls of the hotel during your stay. After a night of clubbing, why not take yourself to the AWAY spa and wellness centre, offering nine different treatments across seven separate treatment rooms? Or better yet, indulge in its collection of eateries, from burger bars to The Duchess, its Michelin-star awarded restaurant.
The crown jewel of the hotel is of course the W Lounge, which has generated quite a lot of traction on Tik Tok for reasons not hard to discover. Good vibes are abundant in this bar meets chill-out zone, which is finished with a heated rooftop pool that boasts unobstructed, 360 views of the Amsterdam skyline. The perfect ending to most evenings.
Another highlight of the residence is its sister location, which is positioned directly opposite the main Exchange building. Home of the AWAY spa, the Bank building champions a complete separation from the bustling streets of the capital, with less than half of the rooms of the Exchange building available to pre-book.
Though always a keen visitor to the spa, my favourite aspect of the secondary building was the X BANK hybrid store; an in-house shopping destination which offered a varied selection of local fashion, art and design; the perfect haven for those looking for a niche souvenir to return home with.
Overall, the commitment of the W Hotel to its lively surroundings is what made my stay such a standout. Though the Bank building is the perfect antidote for those looking for a quieter getaway, the Exchange building perfectly fused the vigour of the city with modern luxury and did so in a way which both energises and offers an idyllic sense of relaxation.
