LFW AW22: David Koma

DAVID Koma’s AW 2022 collection celebrates and investigates the British dress code. After spending the last 20 years in London – the Georgian designer has finally obtained British citizenship. This collection is an outsider’s perception of the different British social sectors and their beloved uniforms.

British archetypes – the upper class, the working class, and the sporty are represented in the 35-look line up. Barely there dresses fit for the queue of Brixton’s hottest nightclub are paired with over-the-knee striped football socks. Bomber jackets with bejewelled flower decals are styled over faux sports jerseys.

The varied garments are styled together with a sense of endearment, highlighting the novelty of the polarized British experience.

A Chelsea royal blue off the shoulder top and asymmetric skirt set is constructed from what appears to be fringed football scarves. The asymmetrical trend is consistent throughout the collection – influencing the hemline of a red, strapless taffeta gown and leather skirts. Jewell embellishments are employed generously, elevating thigh-high leather boots, mini dresses and biker shorts.

The collection is a playful ode to British culture and its idiosyncrasies. David Koma highlights the novelty of the British experience with tender sentimentality.
