THE SHOW notes of Molly Goddard‘s autumn-winter 2024 collection begin by focusing on how she designs. It is never about creating around a concept but rather by uncovering a visual pattern.
Beginning with a series of “experimental” fittings using vintage pieces, samples and toiles from her archive, the designer landed on combining pieces, crafting looks where two become one resulting in large silhouettes inspired by Parisian couture.
Referencing Cristobal Balenciaga and Christian Dior, specifically their 1960s era, skirts are elasticated around the waist rather than restricted with corsets, breathing in a new modernity to famed shapes. Seams are curved, crinkles add texture and layering is prominent throughout.
Known for her explosive tulle, Goddard is all about having fun. So of course, there is an element of childhood at the core of the collection. Cowboy boots accompany feminine dresses, knits are reminiscent of grandma’s jumpers and evening bags are made to be worn daily.
Versatility is king for Goddard and as her collections evolve, the wish to wear tulle everyday of the week is coming more of a reality with each season.
