GLASS photographer Abigail Jane Winterford was invited backstage at Edeline Lee’s show for LFW SS19, The presentation, which took place at the BFC Show Space, was a display that felt different to the usual fashion show. Instead of walking straight-faced, models danced across the show space to a women-only soundtrack, fully demonstrating the versatility of Lee’s designs.

This difference was appropriate as Lee’s aim was to rethink and re-examine the way that women are able to express themselves as their societal roles change for the better and pre-set feminine identities become less relevant and appealing.
Lee explained that the that in her collection, she aimed to juxtapose “woman’s vulnerable, internal persona versus her worldly, exterior facade”.
Fashion, Lee believes, helps women to find the balance between their interior and exterior identities.
The collection featured pieces in block earthy colours: umbers, burnt oranges and forest greens, emphasising the way that modern women can use their own roots and foundations to assert their identities, in a world that no longer requires them to take these from socially constructed norms.

To contrast, the same colours were used in bold, almost psychedelic striped and zig-zag prints, showing that the same essence can be used to express a character that is entirely individual and emphasising the importance of choice in expression of personality.
Lee said, “I think that all women can relate to the feeling of searching for and assuming diverse identities for different moments in their lives. Similarly, the fashion system has parallels to a woman’s journey – fashion is a playground for experimentation with performance and identity.”

The show demonstrated a body positive attitude with the models and dancers reflecting all shapes and sizes. This is an important choice for Lee, as she looks to design clothes in which all women can feel comfortable and express their identities. High-waisted skirts, ruffles and simple silhouettes were used to create figures that felt sophisticated but effortless.
This effortless sophistication meant that Edeline Lee‘s SS19 collection felt contemporary, accessible and relevant for the modern woman.
