Menswear AW16 Milan: Salvatore Ferragamo

Salvatore Ferragamo’s lean towards the vintage bohemia that’s sweeping Italian fashion was as artfully executed as the renaissance’s Florence origins, once renaissance became a European-wide trend that is, at their AW16 runway show this season. The Rimini-born Massimo Giorgetti was the right Italian creative director for the job though, executing whimsical Italian fashions with aplomb.

A stylish cacophony of pattern led all the looks primarily, with smartly styled ensembles keeping the collection pulsing throughout and lively outwear that was versatile and evolving from start to finish. High volume was an ever-present theme also, from chunks of warm saturated tones to the thick layering of sheepskin upon, upon anorak, upon wool, upon chunky knits and some snippets of silk.

This didn’t overwhelm the collection for a moment however, Giorgetti made sure of that, binding typically Italianate Ferragamo high-style in a most correct fashion.

The swank way that Giorgetti mixed the ties that bind classic Italian fashion and the modern romanticised way of thinking was generally pretty stellar and presented a smart new approach for the fashion house.

At the end of the day, you can’t really go wrong when you have craft that is so highly valued behind you, so nothing we saw this season was really that subversive. What’s most interesting for now is going to be spotting the other houses that fall under fashion’s new – new romantic spell.
