PFWM AW21: Loewe

THE hotly-anticipated follow-up to last season’s much-adored Show-on-the Wall box, for the Loewe Men’s AW21 collection, Jonathan Anderson showcased his designs in the form of an exquisite coffee-table book, dedicated to the pioneering work of multidisciplinary artist and writer, Joe Brainard.

Prefaced by poet Ron Padgett, a close friend of the American creative, the 200-page tome includes rarely-seen artworks, comics and ephemera created by Brainard throughout the 1960s and 70s.

Housed in a simple cardboard box, the hardbound volume was accompanied by an intriguing Show-on-a-Shirt, a huge T-shirt printed with the newest Eye/Loewe/Nature collection – the branch of the Spanish luxury brand dedicated to sustainable textiles and recycling.

Equally as alluring were the garments, which came imbued with the Northern Irish designer’s signature DIY charm. This season’s menswear – an expert amalgamation of Anderson’s usual gender-bending with ‘70s subculture tropes and the sustainability-focused aesthetic of the Eye/Loewe/Nature line – saw hardware-laden leather trousers and shearling jackets intermixed with huge, cosy pansy-patterned cardigans.

Brainard’s iconic paintings and quotes appeared throughout, emblazoned on crisp white t-shirts and deconstructed pinstripe suiting, while the selection of accompanying accessories was extensive and put a luxe spin on traditional camping gear; think hefty monogrammed hiking packs and chic Loewe sleeping bags.

Despite being the third instalment in Anderson’s Box runways, this season’s Show-in-a-Book did not feel at all stale, rather, it felt refreshing and, most importantly, uplifting.

While a great number of designers continue to struggle to adapt to the touch-free confines of our brave, new world, Anderson has noticeably thrived, with this season once again demonstrating that his originality and inventiveness knows no bounds.
