NYFW AW23: Lisa Von Tang

SINGAPORE-based designer Lisa Von Tang‘s autumn-winter 2023 collection emphasises embracing spirituality and Mother Earth, resulting in a lineup of poised feminine warriors. The show began with a dynamic live performance by Kate Marc, introducing the metaphorical symbolism of feminine power.

Making this collection truly special, Tang sourced the fabrics and dyes for her collection in various countries, such as Bali, Italy, and Japan, and embraced traditional dying, looming, and craft techniques from the regions. In addition to that, with her continuous dedication to sustainability, Tang attended a course at Tarum, the Balinese home of natural dyes, where she learned about nature’s eco-friendly design options, from natural indigo to mango tree leaves’ zingy yellow pigment and mahogany wood’s red colour.

Tang’s appreciation of Japanese culture is evident in the shibari details added to daywear, including ropes snaking around the torso and shoulders in collarless elongated blazers worn as minidresses and low-rise flared pants with a ribbon wrapped around the waist.

The collection’s evening-wear armours Tang’s warriors in tactile open-weave crochet frocks, tie-dyed and hand-painted body-hugging gowns, and one-shouldered asymmetric minidresses trimmed in braided fringes, boasting a rough mischievousness. The line-up features an earthy colour palette accentuated by hints of fiery red and indigo blue, exalting natural sensuality and strength to empower women further.

Overall, Lisa Von Tang’s AW23 collection is a stunning tribute to Mother Earth and the power of femininity. The collection showcases Tang’s commitment to empowering women through her designs while embracing sustainability and traditional craft techniques.
