NYFW AW14: 3.1 Phillip Lim

With a refreshingly crisp palette of lilac, mauve, peppermint balanced with warmer shades of honey and caramel, Phillip Lim’s AW2014 collection eliminates the dreary gloom of winter. This season, Lim named his imaginary muse Soleil, a reference to her upbeat, cheerful personality and all-round cool.

Lim played heavily on proportions, emphasised by the juxtaposition of graphic patterns and solid colour blocking. Eclipse dresses in wintery pastels, a geometric print zip-up bomber jacket over a lilac window check miniskirt, and a peppermint egg shell tunic over loose graphic trousers alluded to the fresh, sporty and youthful aesthetic of Lim’s muse. If it was all too light, Lim balanced the collection with a series of leather and fur pieces in shades of plum and coffee, including panelled tops, mid length skirts, and oversized collars paired with shearling coats. Lim moved onto more professional attire, with solid cream belts over window print dresses and structured cropped blazers.

Finally, a number of sequined colour block ensembles and flowing eclipse dresses tied the entire collection together.

With graphic prints, proportion and a pleasantly unexpected colour palette being the mainstay of this collection, combined with the day to night versatility of his clothing, Lim has certainly emphasised the cool, easy and chic personality of his imaginary Soleil.
