PFW SS20: Miu Miu

SUSTAINABLE art transcends form in Miu Miu’s SS20 collection debut at PFW. Taking over the Palais d’léna, the Italian house joined forces with Dutch urban architecture and design group, OMA, to create a space fit for a dynamic collection. Enveloping the original structure of the building, the OSB wood used for the installation set the creative tone for the rest of the showcase. What looked like quirky show-space in the eyes of the audience will quickly be deconstructed post-show to be shared among creative professionals and students to work on their own projects. Mirroring this upcycling feat is the collection itself, which simultaneously highlights nature, modernity and contemporary design (all within Miu Miu’s eclectic style, of course).

In keeping with Miu Mius youthful spirit, the SS20 collection celebrates diverse feminine beauty. Looks show great variation in colour palette, fabric and texture, elements which explore the wide-ranging definition of femininity. Starting with darker, muted tones and rigid structures, the showcase evolved to include clothing with pops of colour and effortless flow. Opening designs included an oversized checkered blazer paired with black wide-rimmed glasses and gradually wove in models in ivory white maxi dresses adorned with colourful floral embellishments.

With SS20, creative director Miuccia Prada also lent heavily towards asymmetrical design. This creative decision meant that looks subverted any sort of ordinary expectations. It added an unconventional sassy-ness to the visual while experimenting with edgy silhouettes. A particularly striking look early on was a demure blue dress splattered with light pink paint, floral detailing and one ruffled red shoulder piece.  What may seem like random decision-making to the untrained eye is actually proof of the careful craftsmanship of Miu Miu. For this seemingly whimsical design seamlessly evokes the natural world as well as the spirit of femininity.

Notable appearances on the soon-to-be recycled runway included superstar models Gigi Hadid and Kaia Gerber while audience members ranged from pop-star Rita Ora to fashion guru Alexa Chung. Thanks to Miu Miu SS20, both models and spectators completed this fashion season in a pure celebration of feminine beauty through a sustainable lens.
