PFWM SS27: Celine

MICHAEL Rider’s first standalone menswear collection for Celine felt less like the unveiling of a new chapter than the quiet articulation of a long-held belief: that the most compelling wardrobes are built over time.

Presented at the closing of Paris Fashion Week, the Spring/ Summer 2027 collection proposed a vision of masculinity that prized sincerity over spectacle, encouraging clothes to become companions rather than declarations.

Rather than anchoring the collection to a singular narrative or historical reference, Rider assembled a vocabulary of familiar garments subtly recalibrated through proportion, colour and styling.

Tailored jackets sat loosely on the body, their softened shoulders paired with fluid pleated trousers or narrow silhouettes that skimmed rather than clung. Crisp shirting emerged beneath oversized V-neck knits, while sweaters tied casually at the waist and layered necklaces lent each look the reassuring irregularity of personal style.

Colour unfolded with assured confidence. A restrained opening palette of charcoal, cream and navy gradually gave way to saturated burgundy, butter yellow, cerulean and vivid purple, combinations that felt emotionally intuitive rather than merely decorative. Accessories, too, resisted overt luxury. Beaded ties, jewellery-like belts and delicately constructed leather shoes appeared less as status symbols than as cherished objects his customer had probably worn over the years.

The collection’s underlying philosophy was encapsulated in three words proudly stated in the press release: risk, style and sincerity. Yet Rider’s notion of risk was never theatrical. Instead, it resided in trusting yourself over algorithmic trends, in embracing the imperfect elegance that comes from dressing without overthinking. Every ensemble suggested the wearer had assembled it instinctively from a wardrobe filled with beloved pieces, each carrying its own history.

In doing so, Rider offered something increasingly rare: a quietly optimistic proposal for modern dressing, where luxury is measured not by novelty or excess, but by the confidence to cultivate an authentic, enduring sense of self.
