THE island of Mallorca continues to surprise, and the Jumeriah Hotel and Spa is a jewel in its crown. The property is in the Serra de Tramuntana mountains and perched above an expanse of the Balearic Sea at the end of Port Soller’s horseshoe bay.
My suite has floor-to-ceiling windows and doors that look out to the open skies and never-ending calm water – two shades of sapphire melting into each other; a delectable vantage point to watch the sun set while soaking in the bath or to enjoy an aperitif from its balcony. Now I understand why this hotel was built in this spot; you simply can’t beat the view.

Down in Port Soller, there’s the buzz of the busy marina and a wide range of restaurants alongside the old (but active!) tram track for lunches and dinners, if you can pull yourself away from the grandeur of the hotel.

Later I visit the award-winning Talise Spa – think marble surfaces and dazzling light fittings, conveying Jumeirah opulence with an outside jacuzzi looking out towards the mountainous terrain. As the sun goes down, I move to the heated large infinity pool (one of many) for an unbeatable sunset swim.

Among a selection of the four restaurants at the hotel, I opt for the Spanish fine dining Es Fanals. The semi-open kitchen is busy with several chefs arranging tasty food on plates, including plenty of vegetarian options.
Standout dishes include the mountain mushroom rice (a creamy collision of flavours), red gambas and the multi-coloured garden salad (as delightful to eat as it is to look at). I finish with a faultless chocolate, apricot cream, lavender chantilli and tonka bean ice cream.

On departure, the concierge delivers my hire car. I discover a note upon the dash: “We wish to welcome you soon at your ‘home’ in Mallorca.”
