MFW SS15: Dsquared2

Dean and Dan Caten’s Dsquared2 follies is something we tune in to every season just to see where their minds have taken them. It’s something we just can’t avoid. Prone to approaching each season with a utterly blank slate and, in effect, making this their most apparent signature, the Caten’s did summer basics with sensible sensibility this season.

That’s if you can call sparkly metallics combined with ostrich feather skirts basic, but know Dsquared2 and you’ll notice that this was just a little more commercial than usual, generally without forfeiting a thread of their assertiveness. Audacious silhouettes seen throughout are a shout towards this, but mosaic-like Art Deco prints and embellishments in all the colours in the Caten’s pencil case add a more regulated rhythm.

A Milanese predilection for itsy bitsy bikinis and swimsuits flaunt all the skin that Dsquared is never afraid to brandish, becoming swamped however soon after by the gargantuan ruffles of voluminous skirts, eradicating the sportiness of the swimwear.

All in all, there was much swank luxury commotion this season, but if anyone can wrangle this into a collection worth a round of applause, it’s got to be Canada’s most prominent fashion force. Putting casual and dressy on an SS15 collision course was an interesting direction, their customers wouldn’t expect anything less in their constant evolution, however, we’d love to see an even more thought-through progression next season.
