SS19 LFW: Mary Katrantzou

MARY Katrantzou celebrates a decade of her eponymous label this London Fashion Week. For her SS19 collection, the Greek designer revives some of her past using much loved silhouettes and print – such as the perfume bottles that were printed onto tunics for her autumn 2009 collection, that are remade in metal mesh for tops. The bottles for this collection were inspired by Eternity by Calvin Klein, Pleasures by Estée Lauder and Shalimar By Guerlain, connecting back to the dresses in her first collection. The use of stamps and old-fashioned banknotes draws on her spring 2013 collection.

For her spring- summer 2019 collection, her past and present combine and it is titled The Collection. Each look made reference to specific collectable objects. The beginning looks were based on a stamp theme – a black and a white geometric print foregrounded the intricate details of the stamps that were embroidered onto it.

A collage of famous art pieces were printed on quarter length and cocktail dresses, a mesh spectrum of embroidered butterflies on short dresses and a cropped plastic puffer jacket with coral like decorations. An array of short strapless dresses, either sequinned or structured into a jewellery display came walking down the runway.

The entire collection came full circle with her ten years in the fashion industry, a beautiful tribute to career.
