Glass enjoys Mallorcan hospitality at Sant Francesc Hotel Singular

AS I pull up at the Sant Francesc Hotel Singular, Miguel Feliz, the General Manager, warmly greets me, looking more like a model on a Ralph Lauren photo shoot rather than a hotelier. Miguel schleps my luggage from the taxi and accompanies me into the homely, dimly-lit reception where I am offered a glass of ice-cold champagne.

This former 19th century family manor house is now a glamourous five-star boutique hotel in the heart of the atmospheric old town of Palma, the capital of Mallorca.

It is located near the city’s star attractions of Palma Marina and Palma Cathedral, and steps away from the many Spanish designer boutiques occupying the shady narrow-cobbled streets and open squares.

Mallorca has become a culinary destination with many vendors selling gastronomic goodies, while the island boasts a total of eight Michelin star restaurants.

The smart interior of the hotel retains many original features, including muted coloured ceiling, wall frescos, stone floors, arched doorways and wrought iron balconies, with the original water-well transformed into a gym.

The walls are lined with an international collection of art, many of which were commissioned for the property, and the courtyard provides a shady relaxation spot during the summer months.

The trendy and buzzing rooftop terrace bar comes alive at night to create the perfect spot to watch the sun setting over the terracotta rooftops and church spires. The Balearic vibe can be extended with an al fresco dinner at the Coca Toneta restaurant.

Maria Solivillas, the renowned Mallorcan chef, has included in his menu a variety of Cocas – a simplified flat pizza topped with local produce including seafoods, meats and vegetables.

With over 300 days of sunshine each year in Mallorca, a stay at Sant Francesc seems like the perfect vacation destination.
