Glass is uplifted at Villa Agrippina Gran Melia, Rome

SET in the heart of the Eternal City, the Villa Agrippina Gran Melia offers swift access to the elegant energy of Roman street life, whether the Vatican or St. Peter’s Square, while simultaneously boasting the tranquillity of a hidden away oasis. As Rome’s only urban luxury resort, this former palace, restored a mere decade ago, sits among landscaped gardens, reached through a tree-lined driveway. The pink-hued property is a five-star luxury offering within the Melia Hotels International portfolio, a Spanish brand renowned for generous hospitality and warmth, and which jovially advocates for “lessons in a life well lived”.

Villa Agrippina Amaro

Upon our arrival, we immediately felt uplifted. The hotel’s outdoor swimming pool makes for a stunning centrepiece around which guests can lounge and take in Gala, a relaxed dining outlet that serves delicious Mediterranean-infused fare. After a few glasses of the finest fizz, we were welcomed to the property’s private pool suite – a recent addition, and the most exclusive residence on site. Framed by beautiful greenery, the two-bed apartment is an especially intimate affair, providing a private space for those you truly want some time out. At the poolside patio, we enjoyed a bespoke al-fresco lunch – the first of many excellent dining experiences.

With its indigo sofas and cosy alcoves, Amaro is a perfect spot to start the evening with a cocktail. At Ossimoro, a gorgeous red velvet-lined room, we tasted the freshest fish and richest pasta dishes. These experiences were boosted by the hotel’s wonderful food and beverage team, who went out of their way to accommodate.

After all that luxury, it’s especially pleasing to know that Melia Hotels was voted the world’s most sustainable hotel brand in industry polls held in 2019 and ‘20 – no small feat for this Spanish hotel company. This approach is echoed by the overall ethos at Villa Agrippina Gran Melia, which is grounded not in excess, but by perfectly thought-out and personalised experiences.
