FOR decades Mykonos has been known as a glamorous destination that attracts the world’s wealthy and famous. Over the last few years this idyllic island has become a sun-kissed hotspot for thousands of fashionable vacationers seeking white sandy beaches, stunning hotels and swanky restaurants.
The pool at Myconian Ambassador Hotel
The Myconian Ambassador Hotel overlooks Platis Gialos Beach, just a 12-minute drive from Mykonos Town, and is one of the nine ‘Myconian Collection’ luxury properties scattered around the island. George and Elefteria Daktylides founded the hotel group in 1979, and today their four sons run the business according to the same hospitality ethos interpreted for the next generation.

Arriving to a whitewashed interior highlighted with splashes of blue, we instantly feel a sense of calm as if we are entering into a temple of wellness. This boutique hotel has 70 smart rooms which helps to evoke its homely feel. We’re escorted through a labyrinth of stone-bricked alleyways to our simple yet sophisticated room. A long window fills our suite with bright Mykonian daylight, while the balcony overlooks the Platis Gialos Beach and the Aegean Sea lined with an assortment of superyachts.
The pool at night
The facilities of a state-of-the-art gym, pilates studio and unique underground “thalassotherapy’’ pool (where seawater is used as part of the therapy) make the Myconian Ambassador the ideal island destination for indulgence and relaxation.
We sunbathe by the outdoor pool shaded from the sun by a host of umbrellas and giant palm trees, while our ice-cold bottled water and freshly squeezed juices are replenished throughout the day.

Later that evening we dine at Efisia, the hotel’s candle-lit al fresco restaurant overlooking the beach. Dinner features octopus and the catch-of-the-day sea bass (which is longer than the serving platter it arrives on), accompanied by a crunchy portion of grilled vegetables. Resident chef Giorgos Mouskeftaras selects his menus based on seasonal Grecian produce, which reflects his close relationships with the local farmers and fisherman.
The Myconian Ambassador is only a 15-minute drive from the narrow cobbled streets of Mykonos Town, where the jet-setting atmosphere can be soaked up at the many stylish restaurants and boutiques lining the waterfront.
For those seeking tranquility and serenity, there’s simply no need to leave this hotel. A stay at the Myconian Ambassador manages to capture the treasure of the island of Mykonos at its very finest.
